Edward
was a servant to the King, and his duty demanded that he sleep close to
the king every night. One night the king could not sleep, and so he rang a bell
so that Edward would bring him a book to read. But Edward did not hear the
bell, as he had dozed off himself. After a few more rings, the king got up and
went to see what happened to Edward. The young man was asleep with his head
resting on his cradled arms resting on the table. Next to him was a cold cup of tea and an unfinished letter. The king picked up the letter and started reading
‘Dear Mother, today is the third night that I offered to stay up with the king
as he sleeps. I am exhausted and cannot keep up any longer, but at least I am
happy that I am sending you this extra money so that you can buy some things
for yourself.’ This love between mother and son triggered the king to go into his
room and pick up some more money and place them in Edward’s pocket of his
jacket resting next to him. When he eventually woke up and found the money, he
knew right away where they had come from. So next morning he knelt in front of
the king and apologized to him for what happened the night before, and thanked
him for the extra money. The king on his part, praised the love that Edward
showed towards his mother and encouraged him to continue loving her with utmost
respect.
