Charles August Sandburg recalls in his biography ‘Lincoln: the lost years,’ when Lieutenant Colonel Charles Scott, in the summer of 1862 went to ask President Abraham Lincoln if he could take a few days off so that he could attend his wife’s funeral, who had died by accidental drowning. The President refused ! Early the following morning, the President went to the hotel where Scott was residing and told him personally: ‘I had a very rough night and am very sad. I came to apologize for my remark yesterday. He then invited Scott to ride in his carriage and took him to the Steamship, so that he can board it right away and arrive in time for his wife’s funeral. Many believe that Abraham Lincoln is the best president the USA ever had, and stories like this one show his humility and his closeness to his people.
