People are living longer and longer. Just in a little Retirement Home where I have been helping as chaplain, we had so far 7 centenarians in 10 years. Demographic data indicate that there are approximately 100 to 150 centenarians currently living in Malta. There are over 4,000 individuals aged 90 and over living in Malta. Women outnumber men as there are 2,758 women and 1,247 men over 90. The oldest Maltese is Grace Gatt aged 110. According to records kept in Japan, there were 1153 centenarians living there in 1963. Today the number is 107,677 ! 88% are women and 12% are men. They have a good diet of fish, vegetables and rice. And they walk a lot, use public transport and use also the bicycle frequently. There are approximately 101,000 centenarians in the United States. In 2010 there were 53,364, while in 2020 there were 80,139, with 70% of them being female. This population is projected to grow rapidly, reaching an estimated 422,000 by 2054, just in the United States.
