Those familiar with baseball
have heard of Joe DiMaggio, the New York Yankee star, who has a record 56-game
hitting streak, which will probably never be broken. He was one of the Yankee’s
most popular stars. Most people have also heard of film actress Marilyn Monroe.
Joe played professional baseball from 1936 until 1951 and was beloved by
everyone. He is of course a Hall of Famer, inducted in 1955 in the Baseball
Hall of Fame. He also fell in love with Marilyn Monroe and were married in
January 1954. Even though their marriage lasted 9 months, he loved her until
she died and beyond. She died in August 1962, and Joe kept sending her half-dozen red roses delivered to her crypt three times a
week for 20 years. He
would spend an hour next to
her grave every January 14, the day they got married. He refused to talk about her publicly or otherwise exploit
their relationship. He never married again.
