A teenager in England who
had repeatedly failed in school won a scholarship to Oxford University because
one teacher refused to give up on him. His parents had been urged to put the
boy in an institution for the retarded. But the perceptive teacher found the
cause of his trouble: “He is left-eyed
and right-handed. This accounted for his inability to read. The boy was no fool
– but a potential genius.” After 2 years of hard work on remedial reading
and other subjects, the youngster – at 16 – blossomed into such a scholar that
he won the Oxford scholarship.
