Chicago Cubs players rejoice after a home-run |
I have
followed baseball for the past 35 years, and was a die-hard Mets fan, even
saying the Benediction and Invocation for the team in 1986, just before spring
training – the year they won the World Series! This is like the World Cup in
soccer or the Champions League Cup, or the FA Cup. But today I stop to
congratulate the Chicago Cubs for winning the World Series yesterday against
the Cleveland Indians. It was the first time I could not watch the World Series
on TV, but I was up and early following the last few innings of the 7th
deciding game through the Internet. They won the deciding game 8-7, after being
three games to one behind, and they won the last three games in a row. The last
time they won the Championship was in 1908, that’s 108 years ago, and they
always believed someone must have cursed them as they just could not win, while
the New York Yankees won 27 times during this period. It was a deserved win, as
they showed themselves the best team all year round, climaxing with a
heart-pounding 7-game series which they won only in the 10th inning
of game 7, away from home in Cleveland. As you can see from the first photo,
the players were celebrating a home-run, while the Cleveland fans were
motionless as well as emotionless in the stands.
I’m sure a ticker-tape parade will follow in a few
days through the streets of Chicago – and they surely deserve it. Congratulations Chicago Cubs.
