These are some messages expressed by Pope Francis
yesterday in his speech at the palace of the Malta President:
Do not become victims of consumerism.
Do not detach yourself from the Christian values.
Do not be addicted with the indifference of others.
Let us appreciate the beauty of our country, without
defiling it with excess development and politics that drifts people apart.
Honesty, justice and transparency are the pillars of an
advanced civil society.
Unity and Peace are gifts
which the Maltese people pray for in the National Anthem, a deeply sincere prayer.
The environment should be protected from the thirst of
money, frenetic buildings, which are jeopardizing the future of our young
people, who should instead be involved in good politics and distance themselves
from apathy and lack of commitment.
He emphasized the dignity of workers, the care of seniors
and the danger that some of young people risk ruining their potential by focusing
on empty illusory dreams like drugs.
Speaking of migrants, we
should not build walls or bridges that collapse, nor look at migrants as a virus
we should try to prevent, but as persons whom we should welcome. And so the
Mediterranean Sea should be a sea of solidarity, not a barrier or a tragic shipwreck
of civilization.
Rather than ideological
visions, we should strive to emphasize mercy and care towards others.
He asked that the funds
spent on armaments should be used instead on the development of health and
nutrition among the poor.
May Malta, the heart of
the Mediterranean keeps strengthening the beating of the heart of hope, the
care for human life, the welcoming of strangers, and the yearning of peace.
