Please don’t waste!

When Jesus made the miracle of the multiplication of loaves and fish, he instructed the apostles to pick up the left-overs, so that nothing should go to waste. Well, according to the United Nations Environment Program Food Waste Index,  20% of food prepared for human consumption ends up being wasted, being thrown away. This is equivalent to 1 billion meals a day.  Now understand that 60% of this wasted food is thrown away in our own homes. Pope Leo XIV said that when we throw food away, it is like we are stealing food from the table of the poor people. Let us learn to buy enough food for what we need for a basic meal. And may we learn to never waste left-overs, because good cooks and chefs can create wonderful meals with leftovers.  From my own cooking experience, mostly cooking soups, I make sure that whatever is left in the refrigerator is to be used, and never thrown away. So, just buy in small amounts. With the exception of cabbage, which is big and you use only a small portion of it, everything else is salvageable. And when you do buy cabbage, just give the rest to a friend and so nothing is wasted.
