Frequently we overlook the private lives of artists, singers and actors, but so often we find that there are many values they treasure and live an exemplary life, which we often find out about when they are gone. This was the case with Bob Marley, the King of Reggae music, who was a convert to the Orthodox Church of Ethiopia. He was received into this faith on November 4, 1980 at the Wellington Hotel in Manhattan, NYC. Born in 1945, Bob died at the young age of 36 in 1981 after becoming an icon in Reggae music. He was received in the faith in the presence of his wife Rita and his children, whereupon they cried for half an hour. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has between 40 and 50 million members. Archbishop Abuna Yesehaq who baptized him said of Bob, ‘he used to come to church regularly, often with tears in his eyes as he was so moved to being a part of this community.’ His wife prayed very hard for his conversion, and much of his music is focused on themes of faith with many references to the Bible, which he read daily.
