Meet the fastest man on the planet. That is how the winner of the 100 meters sprint in the Olympics is known as. It was the most unexpected surprise to even see an Italian sprinter reach the final, the first time in the history of the modern Olympics. Then to see Lamont Marcell Jacobs beat all the other outstanding finalists was as sensational a news as can ever be recorded in Olympic history. Jacobs won with a time of 9:80 secs, a sensational time. Italy had won two gold medals in the 200 meters, precisely with Livio Berrutti in Rome in 1960, and Pietro Mennea in 1980 in Moscow. They also won gold medals in long distance races, the marathon and other field events.
But what made this medal by Jacobs even more special was the fact that just 30 minutes earlier, another Italian athlete, Gianmarco Tamberi won the gold medal in the high jump. This made for a historic day for Italian athletics. Jacobs’ name will be remembered with Jim Hines, Valeri Borzov, Carl Lewis, Linford Christie, Usain Bolt and others who won the classic 100 meters in the Olympic Games.
