The
motto of the Olympic Games is Faster, Higher, Stronger (Citius, Altius, Fortius.)
When the modern games started in 1896, Pierre de Coubertin, the father of
modern Olympics coined a phrase that is repeated often during the games’
duration...” The important
thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle, the essential thing is not
to have conquered but to have fought well.” This will be beautiful phrase for
those who will not win any medals, that is the majority of the athletes. But
truly with only a limited number of gold, silver and bronze medals to be
awarded, the best thing that most of the athletes are hoping for is a good
performance. There are countries which are expected to win medals, like the
USA, Brazil, Germany, England, Canada, Australia and many other big countries.
William Chetcuti, double trap shooter from Malta |
Yet there are those who are hoping to win the first ever medal in their
history. Among them is Malta. Our hope is that a young double-trap shooter will eventually
give us at least a bronze medal. He is our best hope and has won many other
tournaments, including the 2011 World Cup event in Beijing and the 2004 European
Junior Championship where he set what is still a world record. William
Chetcuti, we wish you all the best! Let the games begin! And may fairness, joy,
competitiveness, goodwill and safety always reign in the next few weeks in Rio de Janeiro.
