Today Pope Leo will be celebrating Mass at the Sagrada Familia and blessing it in the process after the final piece was installed recently. That piece is the crucifix at the very top. Even though there are a few other sections that need finalizing, which will take another 9 years to complete, one can see that it is finally finished. The blessing will take place exactly 100 years from the death of Antoni Gaudi who died almost as a pauper. The circumstances of his death were very sad, as he always dressed poorly towards the end of his life. In fact he was hit by a tram in Barcelona on June 6, and they took him to a local hospital. But since he had no identification on him, no one recognized him at first, until the chaplain went to see him, and recognized him. Unfortunately he died of his injuries on June 10, 1926. Various architects took over the completion of the monumental Sagrada Familia, and especially after 1950, work progressed steadily, following on the blueprints that Gaudi had prepared.
This exceptional video shows the last finishing touches that took place recently with the erection of the last central tower, representing the figure of Jesus. Please watch this 15 minute video about the last few months of construction of the Sagrada Familia.
