A Pro-Life President

The new Maltese President delivering his maiden speech yesterday.
Malta is proud to have a new President, Dr. George Vella, installed yesterday, who laid out his plans for the next 5 years, in a maiden speech. This includes national unity and the protection of human life from conception until natural death. In an interview he gave to a local TV station he was very passionate about his defense of human life. In his inaugural speech yesterday he said:
“In the context of how the Maltese society has developed over the past few years, national unity is of utmost importance and includes the dialogue between church and state and the various faiths and religions that the Maltese and foreigners profess. I hope that I will continue to see the respect which was always visible, towards the ethical and medical perspective of the health sector – above all the respect for human life from the very beginning to the last breath we take in our life. It is this respect and protection of the ethical, moral and social values that raise the dignity of every individual in our society. It is in our national interest as well as the whole Mediterranean region to strive to see our country as a center for peace, for inter-cultural, as well as inter-religious dialogue in such a sensitive region. I will be leading a quiet Presidency, an impartial Presidency, which will be a moral guide for our country and a point for national unity.”
The day started with a Mass in St John’s Cathedral, where Archbishop Scicluna emphasized that the reputation of the country is strengthened and grows depending on the priorities we have when we embrace the values of integrity, justice, and solidarity. Born in 1942 in Zejtun, Dr. Vella was a medical doctor and a seasoned politician. Married to Miriam for 51 years, he has one son and two daughters, one of whom is married to my cousin. The Vellas have 7 grand-children. Our prayers are with you, Dr. President!
