Along with the choirs of angels, who harmonize and embellish the halls of heaven with their choral singing, there are also many saints and blesseds who played an instrument or composed music throughout the years. Among them there is Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of all musicians, St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696-1787) who played the harpsichord, as well as St. Bartolo Longo (1841-1926) who played the violin, the piano and the flute. St. Carlo Acutis (11991-2006) taught himself how to play the saxophone, while St. Catherine of Bologna (1413-1463) played the viola, even on her death-bed. The French Carmelite St. Elizabeth of the Trinity (1880-1906) played the piano, while St Ephrem the Syria, (306-373) a Turkish theologian wrote over 400 hymns. Blessed Hermann of Reichenau (1013-1054) a German Benedictine monk wrote many hymns, among the the ‘Salve Regina’ and ‘Alma Redemptoris Mater.’ St Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) a German Benedictine prioress wrote well-known compositions. St. Mechtilde of Helfta ( 1241-1298) had a beautiful voice.
