Pope Francis arrives in Malta

A brief biography of Pope Francis as he arrives in Malta:

Born: December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Ordained priest: December 13, 1969. Consecrated Bishop: June 27, 1992.Created Cardinal: February 21, 2001. Elected Pope: March 13, 2013. Francis is the first Jesuit Pope. He was the first Pope from the Americas. He was the first Pope from the Southern Hemisphere. He was the first pope from outside Europe since the Syrian Pope Gregory III, who reigned in the 8th century.

He chose as his episcopal motto Miserando atque eligendo. It is drawn from Saint Bede’s homily on Matthew 9: 9–13: "because he saw him through the eyes of mercy and chose him". While in Germany in the 1980’s, he discovered the devotion of the Madonna that unties the knots, and took a painting with him to Argentina. He often refers to it in his speeches and homilies. He is also a great fan of football, and he especially follows his favorite team San Lorenzo from his native Argentina.

Some Canonizations proclaimed by Pope Francis:

2013 - Jesuit priest St. Peter Faber. - 2015 - St. Junipero Serra, Saints Louis and Zelie Martin.
